Through identifying the root causes of systemic crime and poverty (inequity in education, healthy and economic disparity & joblessness) – ASAP holds the work of the Grassroots Table – “Boots on the Ground”, along with recruiting and training neighborhood leaders to become organizers through the Neighborhood Organizing Team.
The Neighborhood Organizing Team (NOT) and Boots on the Ground (BOTG) are initiatives designed to build leadership and increase effectiveness of neighborhood leaders + to spark, build and grow community movements. The NOT are ASAP team members, that work 365 to discuss and develop strategies to get boots on the ground. BOTG is a community collective of leaders, activists, advocates, diverse professionals and subject matter experts leaning into physical organizing and collaborative, democratic decision-making as a tool to build power and movement in our city!
Boots on the Ground is fighting to get our community out to vote, fighting for housing justice, and working to build up other organizations to address their own unique issues on the ground. We do this by going door to door, calling and checking in on community members, and recruiting people and organizations into our movement.
This project supports the work of neighborhood leaders also known as The Neighborhood Organizing Team that works under our “Boots on the Ground” (BOTG) Division. We develop & utilize established relationships in target areas to connect trusted messengers with at-risk youth through community organizing.
Team members consist of a diverse cross section of our target areas. They are men, women, and youth who have been justice-involved, and committed to being a part of transformative community work. All ASAP members are required to participate in EJBMS – The Ella Jo Baker Movement School – a community training school focused on providing civic and organizing skills for building transformative capacity in marginalized communities. The goal of the Neighborhood Organizing Team is to build leadership and confidence in utilizing tools and strategies that help us to build powerful community movements. These movements provide the presence, power and pressure to address critical community issues like gun violence, housing, and educational injustices.
